With their roots in the rich and bluesy sound of jazz from the bop and classic Blue Note era, The Tom McCarthy Quartet blend standards with original or more recent compositions, and channel the legacy of the great small groups led by Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. Tom especially enjoys recasting more abstract compositions into the earthier swing or bossa-rhythms of mid- '60's veterans (listen to their version of Wayne Shorter's "Mahjong"). Joined by Chicago stalwarts Fred Simon (piano), Larry Kohut (bass), and Dan Leali (drums), McCarthy offers an intelligent, fresh and imaginative revisioning of the classic guitar quartet.
